All PhD students in NELC are required to complete twenty-seven courses at the University of Chicago in order to complete the doctoral degree. But students apply for that degree through a particular Field of Study in the department and pursue curricular requirements specific to their field, designed to prepare students for comprehensive exams in their chosen discipline.
Our program includes 10 fields of study that focus on particular topics or areas of religion. When you enter our program, you will select one of these fields as your specialization—your major area of study. A second religion field is then selected as your inside minor area. You will concentration your course work in these two areas, along with a third area outside of religion.
In addition to their PhD-title, students who finish the necessary 18 ECTS according to one of the field-specific study programs receive a formal confirmation issued by the department of business administration signaling their field-specific profile as a PhD-student.
